Strong and Manly

Having grown up in a pretty good sized family of seven boys there was a lot of competition and fighting that went on. Most of us played one sport or another growing up, whether it was soccer, football, basketball, baseball, or track and field. Many of us still love playing. Now you might think that because of this sporty life growing up that we were all pretty much jocks. Not true. Many of us enjoyed singing in choir. My oldest brother really enjoys reading and is pretty darn smart. Three of my brothers have daughters to raise of their own now and experience all different kinds of supposed girly things. I can enjoy a good chick flick if it's worth it, but I do love my Super Hero movies. You might also think that none of us would have ever worn pink, but that has changed as well. Now I know we made fun of each other if anything like that happened growing up, but isn't that what boys do a little bit. I suppose it might have been a little different if I had any sisters, but i didn't. I'll admit that I own a pink dress shirt and a tie that has pink stripes on it.

Growing up I'm pretty sure I lived with that "tough guise" attitude. I wasn't very mature then. I didn't always make the right choices and sometimes still don't. We all have to grow up and hope that we can change and better ourselves. We need to have good role models that are going to teach us to respect each other. And as much as I may have fought with my brothers, I didn't walk around school fighting others.

Concerning the video we watched in class, it seemed weird that even though it focused on how violent men are, think of all the men who aren't violent. Violence is what portrayed a lot in media. It's always the violent stuff that is going to appear on the news. How often do you see all the little acts of kindness that appear on TV performed by people. Yeah you see acts of kindness in news reports but they are usually pretty big ones. I hope this makes some sense. It's weird to think that we might live in a world that violence is prevalent. We need to better ourselves and set the examples for others. Maybe then society will change its attitude about this "tough guise" attitude.

My Mother, the Baby Boomer!

Much like we talked about in class and as I've mentioned before, people sometimes choose to follow what the media is telling them instead of what we should be telling each other. I love my mother and consider her to be one of the most wonderful women I have ever know. She is not a college graduate and I hope people don't look at that as a form of weakness. She does so much for my family and those around her. Some people in our society, today, might see her as someone who conformed to the old ways of woman staying at home and not being independent. To those who might say this, I say you are wrong. Yes she did stay at home and raise seven boys, but I'm sure we are all great full for what she has done for us boys. She made us into the men we are today. She took us places and attended all our choir and sporting events. Where was my father during all of this? He was at work, but also there to help take care of us boys when he was home. I remember him picking me up after school on his way home from work. He has coached baseball for some of us boys and attended our various activities when he could. Together, not separate, my parents raised me and my six brothers.

I know my parents did their best to raise us to be respectful to woman and to see them as equals. I want to be able for women to be seen as very important in the eyes of men. I want to be able to be married to a woman whom I see as my equal or even better. My father always told me to marry a woman that will make me want to be a better man. You can look at that as not just being a better man, but a better person.

My mother has a strong opinion and is willing to share it with others. I'm pretty sure she is proud of the life she has lived and I hope she regrets none of it. I hope to marry a woman as spiritually and emotionally strong as my own mother. Society needs to leave woman alone. Society needs to let us make the right choices and we can't let media tell us who the "right" woman is. I hope this has all made sense to what we talked about in class. Let me know what you think as classmates.

Sweetest Job EVER!

Surfing the Internet last night I came upon this article on Yahoo.com.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090113/od_afp/lifestyleaustraliatourismoffbeat_20090113032028;_ylt=AjgJI7.ajF8zI.yOC5HdDisazJV4

A company based out of Australia is offering an individual, picked by the company, $105,000 American dollars for six months of work. Anyone in the world can apply for this position. The person hired will live in a home on an island on the Great Barrier Reef. They will take pictures and videos of the world around them and in the reef, and show it to the world via a blog on the Internet and interviews with the media. The company is offering this job to help promote tourism in the area.

After I reading this article I'm pretty tempted to apply for the job myself. Getting this job would open so many doors to the world of communications. It would give great experience to understand what goes on a little when it comes to the news and how people are portrayed in it. Maybe the practice of writing a blog for this class would help for writing a blog for this job. It will be interesting to see how the media covers this job as i t goes forward in the hiring process and the six months that the person will live on the island.

I initially thought in a stereo typical way that the only people who might want this job are oceanographers or islander types. I originally thought these people might be the only ones with the skills to accomplish this job, but as I read it and thought about the job I realized anyone can do it if they just have the desire. Anyone can do it as long as the have the passion to want to do it and can prove to the Australian company hiring, that they are the person for the job. I guess I can ask, would you apply for the job?

First Time

Wow, what can I say? Never blogged before, but this should be interesting. Media is around so much. It's amazing what kind of interesting things you'll find on the Internet. I like sports and that's probably what I notice a lot. The funniest thing I've seen lately concerned Donavon McNabb, quarter back for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was scrambling out side the pocket and up the sidelines on the side of the New York Giants when he was pushed out of bounds. In his excitement he picked up a phone on their sideline and pretended that he was talking to someone; maybe a coach of the Giants team up in the coaches booth. The things some players do. He of course got penalized, but I don't think he was to worried about it. I saw this on NFL.com and Yahoo.com. The media likes its stories.
